3D: Three-Dimensional Design

Once you have submitted a 2D Design or approved a 2D Design created by GJerde Design Consulting, we move to the next phase: 3D CAD Design.

GDC uses the 2D information to generate a “3D Solid Model” using “CAD” software (SolidWorks™ from Dassault Systems).

1. We begin by breaking down the design into features that are either going to be extruded . . .

Base Design

2. added to the solid . . . or

Adding Features to Base
Extruded Base

3. removed from the solid

We then "sketch" these features into the program.

Text can even be cut into the solid model using the same "sketch."

Once the solid model is complete it can be used to generate 2D prints for quote, production, quality control, etc. The solid model also allows generation of the necessary file to output information to the 3D printer for rapid prototyping, as well as the solid files, that are needed by tool makers to build the stamping die or injection molds for production.
